National park Monte Gordo

On the Cape Verde island of Sao Nicolau lies the Monte Gordo national park. This national park is about 952 hectares and Mount Monte Gordo is part of this. This mountain is an inactive volcano and has a height of more than 1,300 meters. In the national park there is an ecosystem with an exceptional variety and wealth. Besides the beautiful flora and fauna you can also enjoy beautiful views here. There are 32 endemic plant species, the majority of which are endangered. Here you can also find the rare Dragon Blood Tree. The park has a number of good hiking trails that also run past some picturesque villages.

The Monte Gordo park is a very nice destination for hikers and lovers of nature and tranquility. The landscape is unique which is partly caused by the differences in climate. In the north and northwest of the park it is very dry. In the south and southeast there are wet areas. You will find many wooded areas with mainly pine trees. There are many types of moss in the moist areas.

A walk to Monte Gordo summit

The most popular walk is to the top of Mount Monte Gorde and starts at about 600 meters altitude. The walk starts from the village of Cachaço and goes up steadily from there. On the top of Monte Gordo you have a magnificent view over the whole of Sao Nicolau. In clear weather you can even see the islands of Sao Vicente, Santo Antao and Santa Luzia. You can of course follow the same route back. It is nicer, however, to walk back down the mountain ridge and end at the village of Praia Branca. Unlike the name suggests, Praia Branca is not near the coast.
